L&T Wins 5,000-10,000 Cr. BPCL Order for India’s largest Polyethylene Swing Unit

Larsen & Tourbo Ltd. (L&T) has won an order worth between Rs. 5,000 to 10,000 crore from Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL). This order will include the construction of India’s Largest Polyethylene Swing Unit at BPCL’s Bina refinery in Madhya Pradesh.
BPCL’s Swing Unit at Bina Refinery to Enable LDPE and HDPE Production

The project will be executed by L&T on a Lump Sum Turnkey basis. The project involves engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of a Linear Low-Density Polyethylene / High-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE / HDPE) Swing Unit at Bina in Madhya Pradesh. The Swing Unit will comprise two trains, with each having a capacity of 575 Kilo Ton Per Annum (KTPA).
Flexibility of the Swing Unit towards producing either Linear Low-Density Polyethylene or High-Density Polyethylene will enable the Bina Refinery to output versatile plastics with varied uses, which in turn will help meet diverse consumer and industrial demands.
Future addition of this project is a crucial part of BPCL’s expansion plan at Bina plant in Madhya Pradesh.
BPCL’s Major Brownfield Expansion at Bina Refinery
Bharat Petroleum Corporation is currently executing a significant brownfield expansion at its Bina Refinery. The foundation stone for the refinery expansion project was laid in 2023. This expansion targets to transform the existing facility into a fully integrated petrochemical complex.
The expansion plan involves an investment of Rs. 49,000 crore and is expected to be completed by 2028.
Bina Refinery to Produce 2,200 Kilo Ton Petrochemical Products Post-Expansion
As part of the aforementioned expansion plan, BPCL’s Bina refinery expansion project targets to set up a petrochemical complex to enhance refinery capacity from 7.8 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) to 11 MMTPA. This enhanced capacity will, in turn, produce over 2,200 Kilo Ton petrochemical products.
In addition to the production of polymers, the refinery will also produce aromatics (Benzene, Toluene & Mixed Xylene) from the complex. These aromatics have usage in downstream industries, and for service units such as production of petrochemicals/ chemicals, pharma & automotive industries, housewares, pipes, among others.
This project will help strengthen domestic polymer production, which will help cut down import dependency.
