JSW Steel to Invest ₹15,000 Cr for 5 MMTPA Steel Plant in Karnataka
JSW Steel Ltd., an Indian multinational Steel making company based in Mumbai, Maharashtra and a subsidiary of JSW Group has earmarked an investment of ₹ 15,000 crore to set up 5 Million Metric Tonne per Annual (MMTPA) Steel-making capacity at its integrated plant in Vijayanagara, Karnataka.
The 5 MMTPA project is being undertaken through JSW Vijayanagar Metallics Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of JSW Steel Ltd and is expected to be completed by FY24.
On 7th January 2022 Hon’ble Union Steel Minister, Shri Ram Chandra Prasad Singh laid the foundation stone for the 5 MMTPA project at JSW Steel Vijayanagar, Karnataka.
JSW Steel’s 5 MMTPA Plant at Vijayanagar, Karnataka
The upcoming 5 MMTPA project will be setup at JSW Steel’s manufacturing unit in Vijayanagar, Karnataka, which is the largest single-location integrated Steel-making facility in India with a current capacity of 12 MMTPA.
The brownfield expansion will be spread across 600 acres and will include establishment of 4.5 MMTPA blast furnace, two Steel Melt Shops of 350 Tons each and 5 MMTPA hot strip mill along with other allied and auxiliary facilities.
The project has already received Environmental Clearance (EC) from the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Government of India and preliminary clearance from Government of Karnataka.
The brownfield expansion at JSW Steel Vijayanagar is part of the broader target set by the company for achieving an overall capacity of 37.5 MMTPA in India & USA by FY25.
On the upcoming plant, Shri Sajjan Jindal, Chairman of JSW Steel at the foundation ceremony held on 7th January 2022 said “… new 5 MMTPA project at Vijayanagar is aligned to our Sustainability goals and focus on circular economy by optimizing our water, waste, carbon and energy footprint. Through the new investments planned here, we will create new job opportunities as well as generate immense value for all our stakeholders. Through the introduction of Artificial Intelligence and other Industry 4.0 interventions at this facility, it will become an integral part of our network of digitally connected smart steel factories in India.”
