Hitachi ABB Power Grids Wins Rs 160 Cr Electrification Order from Indian Railways
Hitachi ABB Power Grids limited, India has bagged an order from the Government of India’s electric locomotive manufacturer, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW), and Central Organization for Rail Electrification (CORE) to power electric freight locomotives for the Indian Railways. The order is valued at INR 160 Crore.
Scope of Work for Order Bagged by Hitachi ABB Power Grids

As per the scope of work for this Chittaranjan Locomotive Works order, Hitachi ABB Power Grids will deliver traction transformers rated 25 KV for Indian locomotive class WAG 9 (WAG 9 was developed by the ABB group).
For Central Organization for Rail Electrification, Hitachi ABB Power Grids will supply track-side transformers rated 132 KV.
About the Transformers to be Supplied by Hitachi ABB Power Grids
“Traction transformers route power from the catenary for essential train functions such as traction, lighting, ventilation, braking, signaling and communication. The trackside transformers reduce power voltage from the utility power network to a suitable level before feeding it to the railway catenary conductors”, as explained by Hitachi ABB in its press release dated 10th March 2021.
Work Order Placed by Indian Railways in line with Its Vision
The order issued by Indian Railways to Hitachi ABB Power Grids limited is in line with Indian Government’s plan of achieving 100% rail electrification by December 2023. Also it shall help create a modern railway system that brings down logistics costs for Indian Industry.
