Hindustan Copper Resumes Ore Production at Kolihan Copper Mine in Rajasthan

Hindustan Copper Ltd. has resumed ore production at Kolihan copper mine of Khetri copper complex in Rajasthan. As per Hindustan Copper, this mine has Copper ore reserves of 20.64 Million Tonne (MT).

Kolihan Copper Mine is an underground mine located in the Khetri Copper Belt in Rajasthan. It is one of the two working mines within the Khetri Copper Complex, the other being Khetri mine.

On 14th May 2024, 15 officials from Hindustan Copper were trapped inside the Kolihan copper mine after the vertical shaft used for personnel transport collapsed. The incident occurred when a vigilance team, accompanied by senior officials from the state-owned company, entered the mine for an inspection. As they were preparing to return to the surface, the shaft’s rope snapped, leaving around 15 individuals stranded several hundred metres underground. Rajasthan Chief Minister stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the accident was caused by the breakage of the lift rope. Tragically, the Chief Vigilance Officer, who was among those trapped, died due to severe injuries. This led to the suspension of operations at Kolihan mine.
