Government Allows All Steel meeting Standards for Highways Irrespective of Source

Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued an order on Sunday 14th February 2021 which allows all kinds of Steel – whether produced from ore, billets, pellets or melting of scrap to be used for National Highways construction, as long as it meets the standards required for specific grades of Steel. Earlier, the contract provisions required use of Steel produced by primary / integrated Steel producers only.

With this move the ministry is trying to reduce cost of highways construction using Steel. Last month during a video conference, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Mr. Nitin Gadkari expressed his concerns over unchecked rise in price of Steel and Cement, and its adverse effect on future highways development projects in India.
