This project shall increase the already significant contribution of AGEL in renewable energy generation capacity of India. Adani Group’s AGEL has a portfolio of projects with 5.29 GW capacity, out of which 2.202 GW is operational and 3.27 GW is in development stage. Further, Adani Green Energy has a target of achieving generation capacity of 10 GW by 2022.

RPO Driving Renewable Energy Growth in Gujarat

At present in Gujarat only 28% of 27,200 MW installed capacity of the state comes from renewable energy sources. The state plans to add 3,000 MW of renewable energy every year till 2022. This is also keeping in mind the Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO).

RPO is the minimum percentage of renewable energy that power generation companies and large power consumers need to buy from renewable sources.

According to a news article of Times of India dtd. 5th Jan 2019, Pankaj Joshi, M.D. Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd. (GUVNL) said “In order to meet our Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) of 17% by 2022 we plan to add 1,000 MW and 2,000 MW from wind and solar every year till 2022”.

Wind Energy Status in Gujarat

As of 31st May 2019, the total installed capacity of wind power in Gujarat was 6,290.47 MW. As of 31st May 2019 the total installed capacity of wind power in India was 36,089.12 MW. Thus Gujarat is contributing 17.4% of the total wind power installed capacity in India. Gujarat has the second largest installed wind power capacity in India.
