Spray Engineering Receives Funding for 2G Ethanol Biofuel Refinery in UP

Spray Engineering Devices Limited (SED), an engineering company based in Mohali, Punjab, has received financial assistance of Rs. 150 crore for its upcoming Ethanol Biofuel Refinery project at Wave Sugar, Dhanaura, in Uttar Pradesh.
The funding has been approved under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas’ PM JI-VAN Yojana. This Yojana provides viability gap funding and financial support for commercial-scale Second Generation (2G) ethanol projects across the country.
Importance of Spray Engineering’s Upcoming Refinery Project
Spray Engineering’s refinery is among the early privately developed commercial-scale 2G ethanol plants in India.
Unlike first-generation (1G) ethanol, which is made mainly from sugarcane juice or food grains, second-generation (2G) ethanol is produced using agricultural residues and other biomass waste. This approach supports India’s transition towards a sustainable bioeconomy by reducing dependence on food-based raw materials, improving waste utilization, and lowering environmental impact.
Highlighting the significance of the project, Mr. Vivek Verma, Managing Director of SED, said, “The future of the sugarcane industry lies beyond sugar and conventional ethanol. It lies in creating integrated bio-industrial ecosystems where agricultural residues become a valuable resource for clean fuels, green chemicals, and sustainable economic growth.”
Spray Engineering’s 91 KLPD Plant in Dhanaura, UP
The company’s Dhanaura facility will have an ethanol production capacity of 91 Kilo Litres Per Day (KLPD).
By combining LanzaTech’s gas fermentation technology with Ankur Scientific Energy’s oxygen-enriched biomass gasification technology in a thermally integrated system, the biorefinery will convert biomass-derived syngas into sustainable ethanol. Further, the plant is also expected to support the production of green chemicals, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) intermediates, and other renewable products.
Commenting on the development, Mr. Sukhraj Soni, Director – Biofuels & Green Chemicals at Spray Engineering, said, “By integrating thermochemical gasification with biological gas fermentation, we are creating a flexible technology platform for producing advanced ethanol today and enabling the next generation of renewable fuels and green chemical products.”
