MMRDA Inaugarates Asia’s Largest Elevated Metro Depot
Mandale depot for Mumbai Metro Line 2B has been recently inaugurated, making it Asia’s largest depot facility and first elevated Metro Depot in India.
This depot, developed by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) spans over 30.45 ha of land and has 29 Km of internal tracks. This elevated depot is built on two levels and can house 72 metro trains. Additionally, the depot has a 965 m metro test track that will be used for testing trains before they start functioning.
Mandale depot also includes advanced maintenance lines and bogie turntables. It has incorporated modern systems such as automated cleaning, wheel profiling, and a control centre, capable of monitoring train operations, safety systems and maintenance schedules. With its various systems, it provides enhanced operational efficiency. The Depot connects DN Nagar in Andheri to Madale in Mankhurd, which in turn will improve connectivity and mobility in Mumbai.
Mandale depot will serve the currently under construction Metro line 2B of the Mumbai Metro. Line 2B will be a 23.643 Km-long elevated corridor with 20 stations. Line 2B will provide connectivity with Western Express Highway, Eastern Express Highway, Western Railway, Central Railway, Mono Rail, Metro Line 1, Metro Line 2A. This line will also provide connectivity with currently under construction Line-4 and Line-3 of Mumbai Metro. As per MMRDA, Line 2B shall reduce travel time by 50% to 75% compared to roads.
