Xbattery Launches BharatBMS: Indigenous Battery Management Solution

Hyderabad-based startup, Xbattery, has launched BharatBMS, India’s first indigenously developed Battery Management System (BMS). A BMS is an electronic component, which is used in battery packs to monitor, manage and control their parameters.

BharatBMS: Every Circuit Board Manufactured in India

Xbattery’s website describes BharatBMS as “India’s first scalable high-voltage Battery Management System”, with every circuit board manufactured in India. BharatBMS has been designed for managing battery packs used in Electric Vehicles (EVs), BESS, and those installed in domestic & industrial settings.

BharatBMS is designed to manage battery packs of upto 800 V. In order to scale up, expansion boards can be added to the main BharatBMS controller, which recognises them and integrates them with itself.

Xbattery offers 5 KWh domestic battery backup, scalable to 15 KWh, and 50 KWh battery backup for industrial and commercial establishments, which is scalable to 150 KWh. As per the company, “It’s (BharatBMS is) as effective in a 5kWh home backup system as it is in megawatt-scale battery packs”.

Mr. Sonu Mishra, Co-founder & CTO of Xbattery, explained, BharatBMS…[requires] only minimal adjustments to seamlessly adapt to different applications, ensuring scalability and efficiency. We want to build tech-driven BESS and BMS systems which can rival the best in the world”.

Real-Time Thermal Management, Diagnostics & Monitoring

BharatBMS is capable of providing real-time thermal management for batteries, which includes thermal runaway detection. Thermal runaway detection involves monitoring of metrics such as temperature, voltage, and gas composition in Li-ion batteries in order to predict any failure due to overheating. Apart from this, BharatBMS provides key diagnostic metrics of the battery packs and their management in real-time by offering data-visualisation and battery lifecycle analytics.

BharatBMS is capable of supporting upto 18 cells in series, and offers passive balancing with an accuracy of 2 mV. Passive balancing basically means that the charge in individual cells in the battery is equalised by dissipating energy from cells with higher charge. This process ensures that all cells in the battery are equally charged in order to optimise the battery’s lifespan and efficiency.

BharatBMS communicates with CAN FD (Controller Area Network with Flexible Data-rate), UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter), and SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) hardware protocols over ethernet. BharatBMS is compliant with ISO 26262 standard for electrical and electronic (E/E) systems in automotive industry.

BharatBMS Designed for Indian Conditions

As per Mr. Satish Reddy, Founder & CEO of Xbattery, “BharatBMS was developed with the unique challenges of India in mind, whether it’s a household dealing with frequent power cuts or a solar farm aiming to optimise energy storage”. Moreover, BharatBMS has been designed to function in the Indian climate.

About Xbattery: Xbattery is based in T-hub, Hyderabad, and is a manufacturer of Li-ion battery packs for EVs, residential & commercial installation, and for Battery Energy Storage Systems. The company also develops associated electronics and software capabilities for its battery pack offerings.
