Telangana Cabinet Approves Rs. 19,500 Cr Hyderabad Metro Phase 2B Project

The Telangana Cabinet has given its approval for the Hyderabad Metro Phase 2B project, which would be implemented jointly by State Goverment of Telengana and Central Government. The project is estimated to incur cost of Rs. 19,579 crore and will cover 86.1 KMs across three key corridors.

Corridors and Routes to be Constructed Under Phase 2B

The proposed Hyderabad Metro project includes three corridors under Phase 2B of Hyderabad metro. The three corridors’ details are as below:

Corridor 1: Shamshabad Airport to Future City, would span 39.6 Kms of which 1.5 km will be underground section, 21 km will be elevated and 17 km at grade or on ground route.

Corridor 2: Jubilee Bus Station to Medchal, would be a fully elevated corridor with 18 stations streching 24.5 km.

Corridor 3: Jubilee Bus Station to Shamirpet, with 14 stations would have 20.35 km elevated and 1.65 km underground route near Hakimpet Airport covering 22 kmin total.

Proposed Hyderabad Metro Phase 2B to Connect Shamshabad Airport and Jubilee Bus Station

The proposed Hyderabad metro Phase 2B project aims to improve urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance connectivity to key areas like Shamshabad Airport, Jubilee bus stand and northern suburbs of Hyderabad. This metro expansion is expected to benefit local commuters as well as visitors coming via airport, improving public transport situation of the ever growing Hyderabad city.

Since the Telangana Cabinet has approved the project, now the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) will be submitted to Central government for final clearance and joint execution.

Telangana State Officials talking to the media speculatively stated that tenders can be floated by late 2025, with civil works beginning early in 2026, subject to environmental and land-related approvals.

The project’s actual implementation will depend on timely financial approvals and coordination between multiple stakeholders, including the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the Airports Authority of India, and local municipal bodies.

Hyderabad Metro Complementing Phase 2A with Phase 2B

The Phase 2B project complements Phase 2A, which covers 76.4 km across five routes with an estimated cost of ₹24,269 crore. Together, Phases 2A and 2B will establish a comprehensive metro network of 162.5 km across eight corridors, with a total investment of ₹43,848 crore. The construction for Phase 2A has commenced in January 2025.
