Tata Power Solar Begins Solar Cell Production at Tirunelveli Plant
Tata Power Solar Limited has commenced commercial production of solar cells at its plant in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. According to Tata Power’s press release dated 9th September 2024, this plant is the largest single-location solar cell and module manufacturing plant in India.
Currently, the plant has a capacity of manufacturing about 2 GW of PhotoVoltaic (PV) cells, which will be increased to 4 GW in the next 4-6 weeks. Tata Power mentioned that thereafter peak production of solar cells at the plant will be achieved in the coming ‘few months’. Earlier, in October 2023, solar module production line at the Tirunelveli plant was commissioned, and has rolled out 1,250 MW of solar modules till date.
Commenting on this development, Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Power, said “The commencement of cell production at our Tirunelveli plant is a significant step towards indigenisation in the solar value chain and achieving self-sufficiency. We are committed to making solar power accessible to all and ensuring a bright future for India, powered by renewable energy”. Tata Power Solar had announced setting-up of this plant in Tamil Nadu in November 2021.
