SAIL to Expand Production with Rs. 30,000 Cr. Investment at Rourkela Steel Plant

Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) will be investing Rs. 30,000 crore for expanding Steel manufacturing capacity at its plant in Rourkela, Odisha.
Rourkela Steel Production Capacity to Reach 9.4 MMTPA by 2030
Through the aforementioned investment, SAIL will expand steel production capacity at its Rourkela plant to 9.4 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) for the current 4.4 MMTPA.
As a part of this expansion, SAIL will install a new coke oven stamp charge battery, thin slab caster-direct rolling mill, cold rolling mill & silicon mill, blast furnace & steel melting shop, raw material handling plant, and sinter plant at its Rourkela steel plant.
Apart from the new installations at Rourkela steel plant, the company will also construct a railway line from Dumertra station in Odisha to Rourkela Steel Plant for improving logistics and avoid overloading Bondamunda Yard. This Yard was constructed to support the Rourkela Steel Plant and oversees the bulk transportation of raw materials and finished steel products.
Commenting on this expansion, Mr. Alok Verma, Director In-Charge of SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant said, “With the expansion, we aim to garner a sizeable share of the sectors which we cater to”.
SAIL Targets 35 MMTPA Steel Production by 2030

SAIL targets to achieve overall 35 MMTPA steel production capacity by 2030. Currently, SAIL produces about 20.30 MMTPA of Steel across all its plants. Following the aforementioned expansion, Rourkela Steel plant will contribute around 25% to the company’s overall target of achieving 35 MMTPA steel production capacity.
Apart from the Rourkela plant, the company has 4 more steel plants namely Durgapur Steel plant & Burnpur Steel plant in West Bengal, Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh and Bokaro Steel Plant in Jharkhand.
Expansion of SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant and Alignment with National Steel Policy
The expansion of SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant is in line with India’s National Steel Policy, which targets to achieve a steel production capacity of 300 MMTPA by 2030. The government has set a further target to increase this capacity to 500 MMTPA by 2047. In FY24, the production of crude steel and finished steel was recorded at 143.6 MMTPA and 138.5 MMTPA, respectively.
