NTPC Awards 6,100 Cr. Sipat Thermal Plant Order to BHEL, Approves 11,131 Cr. for Darlipali TPP

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Ltd. has awarded Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) a Rs. 6,100 crore thermal power project order. This information was conveyed by BHEL in a stock filing dated 20th September 2024.
Interestingly, this order was awarded a day after NTPC’s board approved investments for Sipat Supercritical Thermal Power Project (TPP) Stage-III, and Darlipali TPP Stage-II.
NTPC Awards 800 MW Sipat Supercritical TPP Stage-III Order to BHEL
As per the EPC order secured by BHEL, the company will be responsible for setting up an 800 MW unit for stage-III of Sipat Supercritical TPP for NTPC. This project is located in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh.
Scope of work for BHEL involves supply of equipment, erecting the thermal power unit, and its subsequent commissioning. BHEL will also be executing civil works for Sipat Supercritical TPP stage-III.
Work on the aforementioned project is expected to be completed in the next 2 years.
NTPC Board Approves Rs. 11,131 Cr. for Darlipali Thermal Plant
In a stock filing dated 19th September 2024, NTPC stated that its Board of Directors has approved an investment of Rs. 11,130.98 crore for stage-II of Darlipali Super TPP. This project involves setting up an 800 MW thermal power unit in Darlipali Thermal Power Project, located in Odisha’s Sundargarh district.
NTPC to Add 26 GW of Thermal Power Plants by 2031-32
During NTPC’s earnings call for its Q1 FY-25 financials, Mr. Gurdeep Singh, NTPC CMD, said that the company is in the course of adding 26 GW of thermal power generation capacity.
Earlier, in August, Minister of State for Power, Mr. Shripad Naik had told Rajya Sabha that the Government will be adding over 80 GW coal-based power generation capacity by 2031-32. “…And out of that 80 gigawatt, NTPC will invest in 26 gigawatt”, NTPC’s CMD explained. He went on to elaborate that out of this 26 GW, about 9.5 GW of thermal power capacity is currently under construction while 8 GW is under tendering process. “…And rest of the capacity, we intend to award by the time when we are going to meet next year at this place [by NTPC’s Q1 FY-26 earnings call]”, he added.
Mr. Singh also said that by next year, about 2-2.5 GW of this 26 GW planned thermal power generation capacity will be commissioned.
