Mission Electrification of Indian Railways

Government of India after Paris Climate Agreement (2016) decided to drastically reduce its carbon footprint. To support this initiative Indian Railways started Mission Electrification which aimed at electrifying 24,000 Track Km of the total 28,000 Km of diesel engine operated rail routes across India. In a statement to Lok Sabha in July 2019 Mr. Piyush Goyal, Union Railways Minister informed that in the year 2018-19 Indian Railways consumed 3.1 billion litres of HSD (High Speed Diesel) oil for its energy requirement which was 3% of total HSD consumption of country!
