L&T Energy Wins Supercritical Thermal Power Plant Contracts From NTPC

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Energy’s CarbonLite Solutions division has been awarded contracts to develop Supercritical Thermal Power Plants (TPPs) in India. The company has won these orders from National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).

NTPC had approved a total investment exceeding Rs. 50,000 crore for these thermal power plants. L&T, however, has not specified the exact execution cost of these plants, but classified these orders as ‘Ultra-Mega’ (valued over Rs. 15,000 crore).

L&T Energy to Set Up Thermal Plants in Madhya Pradesh & Bihar

As per these newly secured contracts, L&T Energy will be responsible for developing two thermal power plants, one in Madhya Pradesh and the other in Bihar.

Thermal Power Plant

L&T’s 1,472-acre Nabinagar thermal power plant will be a 2,400 MW supercritical thermal power plant which is being developed in Aurangabad district of Bihar. NTPC had approved an amount of Rs. 29,947.91 crore for this project. This plant will have three thermal power generation units of 800 MW capacity each.

In Madhya Pradesh, the company will be responsible for developing Supercritical TPP in Gadarwara, where L&T will set up two thermal power units. These units will have a capacity of 800 MW and will be established as part of Stage-II of Gadarwara Supercritical Thermal Power Plant. This plant is being developed in Narsinghpur district of Madhya Pradesh. NTPC had mentioned that this upcoming plant will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs. 20,445.69 crore.

L&T Energy’s Scope of Work in Secured Orders

Scope of work for L&T in these orders include setting up thermal power plants in Nabinagar and Gadarwara. The company will be responsible for designing, engineering, manufacturing, supplying, and subsequent commissioning of components for these power plants. These components include boilers, turbines, and Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs).

Additionally, L&T Energy will undertake civil, structural, and architectural work for both the Gadarwara and Nabinagar thermal power plants.

NTPC Plans Expansion of Thermal Capacity and Coal Production

NTPC announced during its Q2 FY-25 earnings call that it is actively considering awarding of 13.6 GW of thermal capacity by FY-27. Separately, NTPC is in the process of developing 11.16 GW of thermal power capacity which is expected to be completed by FY-27. NTPC’s management added, “…to have greater fuel security, we are enhancing our coal mining capacity as well”. NTPC will be expanding its coal production capacity from 40 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) in FY25 to approximately 67 MMTPA by FY29.
