INOX Air Products (INOX AP), an Indian manufacturer of industrial and medical gases, will be investing USD 3 Billion, approximately Rs. 24,931 crore, to develop a liquid Green Ammonia production facility in Maharashtra. This facility will have a production capacity of about 5,00,000 Metric Tonne Per Annum (MTPA).

The company shared this information through a LinkedIn post dated 18th January 2024.

MoU Inked for Maharashtra’s First Green Ammonia Plant

Press Trust of India (PTI) reported that INOX AP signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Maharashtra government to develop the state’s first Green Ammonia plant. The MoU for this plant was signed at World Economic Forum which was held at Davos, Switzerland, from 15th to 19th January 2024.

INOX AP’s Green Ammonia Plant to be Operational in 3 to 5 Years

INOX Air Products’ upcoming Green Ammonia plant is expected to be commissioned in a period of 3 to 5 years.

In its LinkedIn post about this development, INOX Air Products stated, “We are all geared to play a role in making India a global hub for production, usage, and export of green hydrogen under the National Green Hydrogen Mission”.

Focus on Making India a Global Green Hydrogen/ Green Ammonia Hub

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) states the objective of the National Green Hydrogen Mission as making India a ‘global hub’ for the ‘production, utilization, and export of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives’.

As per the NGHM brochure published in January 2023, MNRE targets to place India as an exporter of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives, including Green Ammonia. MNRE assumes global Green Hydrogen/ Green Ammonia demand to reach about 100 Million Metric Tonne Per Annum (MMTPA) by 2030.Many countries are likely to rely on imports due to constraints on land and renewable resources required to produce Green Hydrogen domestically. Aiming at about 10 percent of the global market, India can potentially export about 10 MMT Green Hydrogen/Green Ammonia per annum, states the document.

Current Production of Green Hydrogen, Ammonia in India ‘Very Limited’

Responding to questions in the Rajya Sabha in August 2023, Mr. R.K. Singh, Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy and Power had said that the current production of Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia in India is ‘very limited’.

However, multiple pacts have been signed for Green Ammonia production in India. One of the most recent of these pacts is the agreement signed between Malaysia’s Gentari and AM Green BV for Green Ammonia production in India.
