Indian Oil Introduces Methanol-Blended Petrol in Assam’s Tinsukia
Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL or Indian Oil) has introduced M15 petrol, which is 15% methanol blended with petrol, on a pilot basis in Assam’s Tinsukia district.
Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr Rameswar Teli introduced the M15 petrol on 30th April 2022 in presence of Niti Aayog member Dr VK Saraswat and IOCL chairman Mr SM Vaidya.
Methanol-blended petrol is an attempt to alleviate the fuel price woes of petrol consumers. It is also an introductory step toward Methanol Economy in India. Methanol Economy is an economy where Methanol and Dimethyl ether replace fossil fuels for energy and in industrial processes.
The methanol for blending purposes is being acquired from Assam Petrochemical Ltd., near IOCL’s Digboi refinery.
