Foundation Laid for AM/NS India’s Rs. 70,000 Cr. Steel Plant in Andhra

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has laid the foundation stone for its steel plant at Nakkapalli in Anakapalli district of Andhra Pradesh. The company will be investing Rs. 70,000 crore for the development of this plant.
The foundation ceremony was attended by senior representatives of the Government of India and the Government of Andhra Pradesh, alongside Lakshmi Mittal, Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal, and Aditya Mittal, Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal and Chairman of AM/NS India. This information was shared by the company in its press release dated 23rd March 2026.
AM/NS Andhra Steel Plant’s Capacity and Development
AM/NS India’s upcoming steel plant in Andhra Pradesh will have a manufacturing capacity of 17.8 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA). This facility will be developed in phases. In Phase I, the plant will have 7.3 MMTPA capacity, and in Phase II, the company will achieve the remaining 10.5 MMTPA. The commercial operations at this plant are expected to begin in 2029.

The new AM/NS steel plant in Andhra Pradesh will be able to manufacture diverse steel grades, including high-quality, value-added products, to boost India’s self-reliance and reduce imports.
This plant is expected to generate 1,00,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
Commenting on this development, Mr. Aditya Mittal, Chairman, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, said, “Steel is the fabric of life, and we are proud to have the opportunity to contribute to expanding India’s steel capabilities with this amazing new plant, which will be one of the most competitive, modern facilities in the country”.
Further, speaking about the location of this plant, Mr. Mittal said, “Its coastal position and the fact it can easily be connected to the richest iron-ore belt in the country through our existing slurry pipeline make this an excellent place to manufacture steel”.
ArcelorMittal’s Capacity Expansion Plans in India
ArcelorMittal, through its AM/NS India joint venture, targets to expand its Indian steel production capacity to 25–26 MMTPA by 2030, with a long-term goal of achieving over 40 MMTPA. Currently, the company has a steel production capacity of 9.6 MMTPA.
Apart from developing a new plant in Andhra Pradesh to achieve the capacity target, the company is also increasing the capacity of its Hazira plant to 18 MMTPA. This expansion is expected to be completed by 2026–27.
Mr. Mittal mentioned that the completion of the Andhra Pradesh plant will augment the position of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India as one of the leading steel companies in the country.
Also, the company opened India’s first steel scrap-processing facility in Maharashtra with an investment of 350 crore.
Indian Steel Market Growth Outlook
As per a report by Mordor Intelligence, India steel market size is expected to grow from 162.23 million tons in 2025 to 177.03 million tons in 2026 and is forecast to reach 273.88 million tons by 2031, at a 9.12% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) over 2026–2031.
