Two New Corridors Approved under Phase 2 of Pune Metro
Union Cabinet has approved the construction of two elevated corridors (corridors 2A & 2B) under Pune Metro phase 2 project. These new corridors will have a collective length of 12.75 Km. These corridors will be developed as extensions of the existing Vanaz to Ramwadi corridor (existing Line 2) of Pune Metro, which had been developed in phase 1 of Pune Metro project.
Construction of corridors 2A and 2B of Pune Metro are expected to be completed in a period of 4 years.
New Metro Corridors will connect Pune’s Growing Eastern & Western Suburbs – Maha Metro MD
Commenting on this development, Mr. Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of Maha-Metro, said, “These two new metro corridors will connect Pune’s rapidly growing eastern and western suburbs to the rest of the city. Thousands of citizens in these areas will benefit from the improved connectivity”.
Corridor 2A of Pune Metro will be constructed from Vanaz to Chandani Chowk in Pune. This new corridor will be 1.12 Km in length and will add two metro stations to Pune Metro’s Line-2, namely Kothrud Bus Depot & Chandani Chowk.
Pune Metro’s Corridor 2B will be 11.63 Km in length and will connect Ramwadi to Wagholi in Pune via 11 stations. These stations will be constructed at Viman Nagar, Somnath Nagar, Kharadi Bypass, Tulaja Bhavani, Ubale Nagar, Upper Kharadi Raod, Wagheswar Temple, Wagholi, Siddharth Nagar, Bakori Phata and Vitthalwadi.
Therefore, after extension, Line-2 of Pune Metro will connect Chandani Chowk to Vitthalwadi. This expansion will serve IT hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions, and residential pockets.
Pune Metro Line 2’s Ridership Projected to Grow
Extension of the Pune Metro Line 2 is expected to increase its ridership, as it will connect Pune to its major eastern and western suburbs. Even as of now, out of Pune Metro’s 3 lines, Line-2 is the busiest route. Currently, Pune Metro’s Line 2 has a daily ridership of about 2 lakh passengers, which is expected to increase by 0.96 lakh in 2027, by 2.01 lakh in 2037, by 2.87 lakh in 2047, and by 3.49 lakh in 2057.
