BHEL Begins Supply of Traction Transformers for Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Project

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has commenced the supply of semi-high-speed underslung traction transformers for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project. The project is being executed by a BHEL-led consortium in partnership with Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL).

These traction transformers are designed for operational speeds of up to 160 kmph, with a design capability of 180 kmph, and are being dispatched to Kolkata for final train assembly. The transformers have been dispatched from BHEL’s manufacturing facility located in Jhansi.

Notably, this development has further strengthened BHEL’s presence and entry into the semi-high-speed propulsion segment of the railways sector.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project represents an expansion of India’s indigenous semi-high-speed rail network and is specifically designed to replace conventional Rajdhani and Duronto Express trains for overnight long-distance travel.

In addition to the manufacturing and supplying of traction transformers, another key propulsion system equipment, the traction motor, has been developed and manufactured by BHEL’s Bhopal unit.
