NPCIL Floats Tender for Engineering & Design of Bharat Small Reactors
India’s power sector has long relied on coal, but a large number of thermal power plants are aging and nearing retirement. While renewable energy capacity is expanding rapidly, it cannot yet provide reliable round-the-clock baseload power at scale. To address this challenge, India is advancing the indigenous Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR) programme, led by BARC, which aims to repurpose aging thermal power plant sites using small nuclear reactors.
As part of this initiative, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has floated a tender for plant engineering and 3D modelling of its 220 MW Bharat Small Reactors (BSRs).
Scope of work under the tender includes design and engineering for civil, process, mechanical, piping, electrical, Control and Instrumentation (C&I), and ventilation and air conditioning systems. It also covers piping stress analysis and comprehensive 3D modelling. The reactors will be based on 220 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) technology.
The last date for submission of bids is 10th August 2026.
