JSW Steel Limited has commenced the construction of its Rs. 16,350 crore steel manufacturing plant in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh. The project will be developed in two phases and will have a total steel production capacity of 2 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA).

JSW Steel’s Project to Be Developed in Two Phases

In the first phase of the project, JSW Steel will invest Rs. 4,500 crore to establish a 1 MTPA steel manufacturing facility. The second phase will involve an additional investment of Rs. 11,850 crore, expanding the plant’s total production capacity to 2 MTPA along with introduction of advanced, low-carbon and structural steel production technologies, and extensive use of decarbonisation technologies. Phase 2 will transition the manufacturing towards higher-margin products.

Aluminium Rolled

Steel plant will be developed across 1,100 acres of land.

According to the company’s press release, the facility will utilize Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology with recycled scrap and Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) as primary raw materials for manufacturing structural steel.

Commercial operations of the first phase are expected to commence by March 2028, while the second phase is scheduled to become operational by 2034.

Commenting on the development, Mr. Jayant Acharya, Joint Managing Director & CEO, JSW Steel, said, “The project aligns with our long-term strategy of building future-ready manufacturing assets while supporting regional industrial development. We believe the project will play an important role in strengthening domestic steelmaking capabilities and supporting the region’s growth ambitions”.

JSW Steel’s Project to Be Powered by Renewable Energy

The upcoming steel plant is expected to generate around 2,700 direct employment opportunities across both phases of development. To support the plant’s sustainability goals, JSW Neo Energy will develop solar and wind power projects totaling 3,850 MW of capacity to supply renewable energy to the steel complex.

India’s Steel Market to Reach 274 MT by 2031

JSW Steel project in Andhra Pradesh comes at a time when India’s steel industry is witnessing strong growth, driven by rising demand from infrastructure development, construction, and the automotive sector.

According to Mordor Intelligence, India’s steel market is projected to grow from 177.03 Million Tonnes (MT) in 2026 to 273.88 MT by 2031, registering a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 9.12% during the forecast period.

As the world’s second-largest steel producer, India is targeting a steel production capacity of 300 MT by 2030, while domestic steel consumption is expected to nearly double by the end of the decade, reinforcing the country’s position as a major driver of global steel demand.

Some of the recent developments in India’s steel sector include JSW Steel’s 13.2 MTPA integrated steel plant in Odisha, Godawari Power & Ispat’s 1 MMTPA steel plant in Chhattisgarh, and AM/NS India’s 17.8 MMTPA steel project in Andhra Pradesh.
