ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has opened its first scrap-processing facility at Khopoli, Maharashtra. This plant has a capacity of processing 120 Kilo Tonne of scrap Per Annum (KTPA).

AM/NS Newly Opened Scrap Processing Units in Khopoli

AM/NS’s newly opened scrap processing plant in Khopoli is the first of four scrap processing units being developed by the company in India. These units are being developed at a total investment of Rs. 350 crore.

These plants target to meet the growing demand for high-quality scrap for the company’s steel production and strengthen domestic scrap supply chains. Mr. Akshaya Gujral, Executive Director of Downstream Operations at AM/NS India, said “By the end of FY26, we should have four functional scrap yards. This should give us approximately 0.5 mt of scrap which we can process and consume directly in our processes”.

Steel Scrap Demand to Reach 50 MT by 2030-35 – AM/NS’s Executive Director

Mr. Gujral mentioned that by 2030-2035, Steel scrap demand in India is projected to reach approximately 50 Million Tonnes (MT). In 2024, India’s Steel scrap demand stood at 39 MT, indicating a growing gap that may necessitate imports. However, he noted that scrap imports are likely to decline over time as global sources diminish.

Growth of India’s Scrap Processing Industry

India’s scrap processing industry is expanding rapidly, driven by Government initiatives to boost domestic scrap production, reduce import dependence, and support decarbonization efforts. The Government aims to increase scrap usage in steelmaking, targeting a 50:50 ratio of scrap to iron ore by 2047.

Several key players, including CMR Green Technologies Ltd., MTC Business Pvt Ltd, and SGNCO Green Resources Limited, are leading the way with major scrap processing facilities, contributing to the industry’s growth.
