Godawari Power & Ispat Ltd. (GPIL), an integrated steel producer based in Chhattisgarh, will be establishing a new 2 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) integrated steel plant with a development cost of Rs. 6,000 crore. This upcoming facility will be located in Sarora village, under the Tilda tehsil of Raipur district in Chhattisgarh.
Environmental Clearance Received for New Steel Plant
GPIL’s newly announced steel project has recently received environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). The clearance was granted during the 7th Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) meeting held on 9th July 2025. With this clearance, now GPIL could move forward with the development of its greenfield steel plant project.
Project to be Developed in Two Phases
Godawari Power & Ispat’s upcoming plant in Raipur will be developed in two phases, with the first phase targeting a production capacity of 1 MMTPA and the second phase bringing the total capacity to 2 MMTPA. GPIL will be funding this investment through a mix of internal accruals and debt.
The company will develop this plant in an area of 578 acres. This project is expected to be completed within a period of 36 months from the start of its construction date.
GPIL Plans Infrastructure for Raipur Steel Complex
The company’s steel complex in Raipur will feature various facilities including 3.6 MMTPA beneficiation plant, 3 MMTPA pellet plant, 0.8 MMTPA coke oven plant, 1.2 MMTPA sinter plant, 2 MMTPA blast furnace with pig casting machine and 2.8 MMTPA hot strip mill. Godawari Power & Ispat will also develop a 312.5 MW captive power plant to meet the energy needs of this new plant.
India’s Steel Demand to Reach 192 MT by 2030
India’s steel demand is expected to grow steadily over the next decade, driven by large-scale investments in infrastructure and manufacturing. In this context, GPIL’s expansion aligns well with national priorities and market trends.
According to a report by BIGMINT, India’s steel demand is expected to reach 192 Million Tonnes (MT) by 2030, growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 18%. The report highlights that over 60% of this demand will be driven by the construction and infrastructure sectors.
As per the latest data, India’s steel consumption rose to 149 MT in FY25, up from 136 MT in FY24. The construction sector accounted for 47 MT of this demand, while the infrastructure segment contributed 42 MT. By FY30, the construction sector’s share is projected to rise to 64 MT and infrastructure demand is expected to reach 55 MT, reflecting the country’s pipeline of housing, road, railway, metro, and logistics projects.
