Vedanta Aluminium to Source Natural Gas from GAIL for Aluminium Production
Vedanta Aluminium has signed an agreement with GAIL Gas Ltd., a subsidiary of GAIL (India) Ltd., to procure natural gas for its Aluminium production. GAIL will supply natural gas to Vedanta’s Jharsuguda smelter, which as per Vedanta is the largest Aluminium plant in the world.
This information was shared by Vedanta Aluminium in its press release dated 20th November 2024.
As per this agreement, GAIL Gas Ltd. will build a 7.5 km dedicated pipeline to deliver about 32,000 Standard Cubic Metres (SCM) of natural gas per day to Vedanta’s smelter. The gas supply will begin once the pipeline is completed. The agreement defines a five-year supply contract for natural gas via this pipeline. This collaboration targets to reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 47,292 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent every year. It must be noted that Vedanta Aluminium plans to be net-zero in terms of Carbon emissions by 2050.
Commenting on this partnership of Vedanta Aluminium and GAIL Gas, Ms. Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Non-executive Director at Vedanta and Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc Ltd. said “ By transitioning to natural gas at our Jharsuguda operations—the largest aluminium plant in the world—we are taking a decisive step toward aligning our operations with India’s clean energy vision and our ESG goals”.
Vedanta Aluminium also mentioned that this agreement is instrumental in securing fuel for its upcoming 430 Kilo Tonnes Per Annum (KTPA) cast house at Jharsuguda. This facility will process molten metal into aluminium products, producing 250 KTPA of billets and 180 KTPA of other value-added products, such as wire rods, rolled products, and ingots.
